Chef Scholarships at St Austell Brewery | St Austell Brewery

Become a Chef Apprentice with St Austell Brewery Family Group

Do you have a passion for cooking with fresh, locally sourced ingredients? Or perhaps you’ve always dreamed of being a chef but don’t know where to start?

As a St Austell Family Group Chef Apprentice, you’ll earn practical experience in the kitchen while enrolling on an academic-based course to develop all the skills you need for a successful career. What’s more, you’ll do it all from one of the South West’s most beautiful and sought-after locations. Earn while you craft your culinary skills, guided every step of the way by talented and experienced team members.

St Austell Family Group is a family-owned business with world class brewing and pubs at its heart. We are proud of our 170-year heritage, independence, and values. Our portfolio of 180 pubs, inns, and hotels are go-to destinations where good times are celebrated with excellent food and drink. The provenance and quality of our ingredients are key, and so is the calibre of our talented food team.

We are now looking for our next intake of Chef Apprentices. Experience is not essential – in fact, our Chef Apprenticeships are aimed at those with little or no experience. All we ask is that you have a positive attitude and the desire to start a future in the role.

Our partnerships with Truro & Penwith College, Exeter College, and Bath College enable us to ensure our apprentices receive outstanding levels of support throughout the programme, no matter where they are based in our portfolio of West Country destinations.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for hands-on, passionate and energetic individuals that work well within a team and have a passion for food. You may have some experience in the kitchen or just have a desire to start a career as a chef. Either way, if you love cooking and are interested in finding out more, we would love to hear from you!

Learning and development

Our Chef Scholars all undertake a 12-month Commis Chef Apprenticeship, where they work at college and with other chefs from our business to learn and practice the new skills they will need to become an established and qualified chef. We develop their skills, knowledge and behaviours through practical workshops and hands-on experience. They work closely throughout their scholarship, coordinating with the college team and the head office learning & development team, who are there to support them on their journey.

In the kitchen

You will be working with local fresh produce and play a hands-on role preparing and cooking dishes to a high standard.  You will gain an understanding of how to use ingredients to the best of their potential and learn how to manage stock and waste in day to day service. A key part of your role will be to understand best and safe practice in a commercial kitchen and learn how to manage and implement the safe delivery of food to our guests.

Pay and benefits

We don’t believe in paying apprenticeship rates, so you will be paid a minimum of £7 per hour or minimum wage for your age –whichever is higher. On successful completion of the 12-month scholarship, you will have the opportunity to gain a permanent role within the St Austell Brewery Managed Estate. You’ll also get 30% discount on food and drink, as well as a 50% discount on accommodation across our Managed Estate with our ‘team reward card’. On top of this, you will receive access to our employee reward programme and contributory pension scheme.
